The first Chinese Road Traffic Safety Forum was organised by ITS China and held in Beijing 8 September 2010. The event was used by the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Science and Technology and some of the major Chinese research organisations to present the planned actions for using Intelligent Transport Systems to improve road safety in China.

The Chinese authorities presented the plans to include ITS for road safety in the coming Chinese 5-year transport policy programme. FIA Foundation, eSafetyAware, Continental and Bosch were as the only participants from outside Asia supporting the event by organising an ESC demonstration for the public in the heart of Beijing. Jacob Bangsgaard, FIA Foundation, presented to the Forum the planned global goals on the vehicle safety side within the Decade of Action for road safety.

The Chinese automotive club FASC, ITS China, FIA Foundation and eSafetyAware signed in April 2009 a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the cooperation on deployment of advanced vehicle safety technologies. The same organisations plan to launch a number of actions from 2011 to support the Decade of Action with the goal of bringing Electronic Stability Control and other important vehicle safety systems to all new cars in China by 2020.

China will be a key player for the future global automotive market both on the consumer and production side. Road safety has in recent years become a top priority in China but still close to 80.000 persons are killed each year on Chinese roads. The Decade of Action is by the Chinese authorities seen as an opportunity to launch national awareness activities and seek global cooperation on vehicle safety standards and regulations.
