The European Commission’s signatory eCall event took place on 4 May at the Berlaymont building in Brussels.
The eSafety Challenge project facilitated an eCall demonstration session along with Continental and Airbiquity. The ceremony provoked a further five Member States to endorse the pan-European eCall emergency system. Belgium, Denmark, Luxemburg, Malta and Romania join the 15 European countries to have already signed the EU's Memorandum of Understanding to implement eCall across Europe.
The eCall system works by automatically dialing Europe's single emergency number, 112, in the event of a serious accident. The exact location and other vital information related to the accident are then systematically transferred to the nearest emergency service, substantially reducing response time.
During the eCall demonstration given outside the Berlaymont building, participants and members of the general public had the opportunity to watch a manually started eCall, and even try it out for themselves. Amongst the participants at the demonstration was European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes and MEP Zita Gurmai, together with multiple Government Ministers.
